Prep Time:30 minutes
Total Time:30 minutes

Equipment

  • Parchment or wax paper
  • Microwave-safe bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 lb large strawberries
  • 12 ounces orange candy melts (1 package)
  • 3 ounces black candy melts
  • to make ghosts, you'll also want white candy melts and candy eyes

Instructions

  • Prepare the strawberries. Wash and dry the strawberries thoroughly and allow them to come to room temperature.
  • Melt the candy melts. In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt the orange, black, and white candy melts according to the package directions. Do not overheat, or they will become hard and clumpy.
  • Dip the strawberries. Hold a strawberry by the green top or use a skewer to dip it into the melted orange candy melts. You can either coat it fully or leave red "shoulders." Repeat with black and white candy melts as needed for variety.

  • Decorate. Using a toothpick, draw a face on the dipped strawberries for jack-o'-lanterns. For ghosts, dip in white candy melts and add candy eyes while the coating is still wet. Use the black candy melts for additional decorative details, such as mummy stripes or other spooky designs.

  • Cool and set. Place the decorated strawberries on parchment paper and let them cool until the candy hardens.

Notes

For the best chocolate-covered strawberries, make sure your fruit is completely dry and at room temperature before starting. Cold strawberries can cause the candy melts to harden too quickly and unevenly.
Stir the candy melts often while melting to make sure they are smooth and evenly melted. If they start to thicken, add a small amount of vegetable oil to keep them fluid.
If your candy melts get too thick or hard to work with, you can add a little shortening to thin it out. Just be careful not to add too much, or your chocolate will be too runny.
Use skewers or toothpicks to dip the strawberries for better control and to keep your hands clean.
Decorate the strawberries right after dipping while the candy melts are still wet to help the decorations stick better.
