short glass jar full of french fry seasoning.

Notes

This will fit into a half-pint mason jar but will fill it almost to the very top.
It is not spicy, even with the cayenne added, but you can leave it out if you are very sensitive to heat.

Everyone has that chain restaurant that they would secretly rather go to over the nicest place in town. For me, it’s Red Robin (or Outback, but just for the Caesar salad and drinks). I love it all. The burgers, the milkshakes, but especially… the fries.

I have it on good authority that this seasoning is sprinkled on everything that leaves the kitchen there. Except, I assume, the milkshakes.

Kitchen Wisdom

Spice blends save you a lot of money, unless you don’t finish them off, and then they were a waste. That’s why I tend to have three basics on hand: a “house blend” (this one!), a Cajun blend, and a meat rub, like Prairie Dust. No need for any other type of mix in the cabinet getting lost and confusing you!

Tips for Success

Use fresh spices for best flavor. If your paprika has been sitting around since last year, it’s time for a new jar

Mix thoroughly until the color is completely uniform – any streaks mean you’ve got uneven seasoning

You can customize this further to your tastes! Try adding herbs like oregano or thyme, or use smoked sea salt instead of regular.

You can also make it spicier by adding more cayenne pepper.

Don’t forget to label and date the jar: Labeling and dating the jar will help you keep track of when you made it. It will last for months but will lose flavor after a while. And a lot of homemade seasonings look similar!

Ingredients and Equipment

Paprika & Smoked Paprika: Generic is fine.

Celery Seed: Don’t substitute celery salt; it will be too salty.

ingredients in ramekins on dark wood surface.

Cayenne: Fresh cayenne makes a big difference.

Storage Container: A half-pint mason jar with a shaker lid works perfectly

Make It Your Own

  • Adjust the heat by varying the cayenne – or omit it entirely
  • For a lower-sodium version, reduce the salt by half (though it won’t be quite the same)
  • Add dried herbs like thyme or oregano for an Italian-style blend
  • Try chipotle powder instead of cayenne for a smokier heat
  • Mix into softened butter for an amazing compound butter

Storage & Serving

Keeps for 6 months in an airtight container away from heat and light.

Sprinkle on:

  • French fries (obviously!)
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Grilled meats
  • Popcorn

Keep it handy – you’ll reach for it more often than you think.

I added Cumin 1/4 teaspoon. My daughter brought me a packet today and I think it’s in there. Otherwise spot on! Thanks!
